The Australian Medical Association NSW (AMA) is the peak body representing the interests of the NSW medical profession. In 2011 the Association’s executive management determined to conduct a review of existing computers and technology infrastructure.

We conducted a comprehensive review of existing ICT infrastructure and operations, assessed needs, and prepared appropriate techno-economic and operational advice. We employed an evidence based approach for the review process utilising techniques developed by Dr Rob Reider, an internationally recognised expert in planning and conducting operational reviews, as well as adhering to Microsoft TechNet guidelines for conducting Operations Management Reviews.

The review comprised assessment of existing ICT assets, current policies and procedures, outsourcing and other contractual arrangements, including service level agreements, plus a comprehensive requirements survey and needs assessment.

A review report including wide-ranging set of technical and operational recommendations was created including indicative implementation methods and an estimate of the probable costs involved. A draft ICT strategy was also developed covering anticipated needs and change requirements for the next few years.

The review and its key recommendations were accepted by the AMA’s executive management in March 2012. We then provided assistance with implementation of the initial review recommendations. This included engagement of an inhouse IT Manager and selection of an outsourced ITSM provider aligned with AMA needs, as well as setting some directions for further development of the ICT Strategy.
